When it comes to surfing the World
Wide Web, many older American are “wiping out”
in the currents of changing technologies. The Computers
for All Levels courses at Life Enrichment Services help
such people be ready to ride the information wave.
Most of the people that take Life Enrichment’s
computer courses were not exposed to computer usage
before leaving the workplace. Many have family scattered
all over the country and are looking for a quick, cheap
and easy way to communicate with their loved ones. It
is estimated that over 75% of homes in the U.S. today
have a personal computer system. Many older people see
the Internet as a way to keep up with a rapidly changing
world.
Betty Faircloth has taken computer courses for several
years. She started when she bought a computer “just
to keep up with the times” and was unable to use
it! She took introductory through advanced Internet
and Windows courses, and still takes courses on certain
programs to add to her computer knowledge.
Faircloth said that she enjoys that Life Enrichment
Services’ computer courses are designed for senior
citizens. She said that the courses go slower than technical
college computer courses and also that the instructors
are more patient with older people and explain things
more than once.
Faircloth says she has learned a great deal from her
computer training. She is online every day reading and
sending emails to her family and friends. She misses
the days of pen and paper letter writing, but loves
emailing because it is quick and convenient.
Bill Bozarth teaches some of the computer classes. He
said he likes to have a wide variety of classes to address
the needs of seniors. Bozarth said it is important to
take computer courses to stay informed and involved
in today’s world. Computer classes are also great
places to meet others who share similar interests.
Elizabeth Ross has also taken computer classes for several
years. She said that having knowledge of the computer
helped to relieve some of the stress that came from
recently losing her husband. She is a bridge player,
and often plays bridge online for enjoyment. She said
taking computer courses has been extremely helpful in
her everyday life. She said she has learned to install
programs, and is now looking into an online filing system.
She recommends Life Enrichment Services’ classes
to other senior adults because the teachers are on the
same level and listen to the needs of the students.
In this ever-changing world, knowledge and mastery of
computer skills is a must. Life Enrichment Services
